Coming Home

It's that time of the year to rewatch old movies with family and friends, when it feels nice to make a cup of hot chocolate for two. It's a time when you flip through old photo albums or handwritten notes, delve into traditional family recipes and cook & eat your dessert.

Old traditions are now mixed with the new ones. Instant food and grocery delivery services allow us to indulge in the comforts of our home to pretty much anything our heart desires. Creating intricate rangoli designs is as simple as tapping a stencil. You don’t have to curate a mixtape, YouTube or Spotify do that for you and yet, towards the end of the night we listen to the songs of old.

It's a pleasant coincidence that the year wraps up with festivities sprinkled across the final months, beckoning us to celebrate but to also step back and reflect: the losses, the lessons, the wins, heartbreaks and hopeful blessings.

“Some people go to priests; others to poetry; I to my friends.”

― Virginia Woolf

It was said somewhere that home is where the heart is, but we’ve discovered a better method– look towards the sidelines: see who claps when you win, who offers a hand when you stumble. Those who pull your leg when you’re around but sing your praise when you aren’t. Those who make long distance seem like a mere illusion of physical space. It's this rescue team that shows up without you having to say a word. This group of companions might not always be around us; after all life can get busy, friends eventually move away, or might not promptly text back. It's simply enough to know they're in our corner.

“I've had a splendid time," she concluded happily, "and I feel that it marks an epoch in my life. But the best of it all was the coming home.”

— Lucy Maud Montgomery (Ann of Green Gables)

As the dust settles down, after you have attended your share of dinners, parties and get-togethers and you return home alone or to your family, partner, pets or plants, it feels like a time to reflect on deeper relationships which sometimes sustain us.

It feels like the right time to return to what matters most—to come back to the warmth of your loved ones, to come back home.
